Global Open Collaborative Worksites – speed development, pre-competitive research, open design and fabrication

Temperature-dependent elastic moduli of lead telluride-based thermoelectric materials

Edgar Lara-Curzio,

Thank you for the paper. I am reading it now.

I wonder if open systems will eventually replace commercial solutions? The problem with commercial is they are usally too small. I try to track all open collaboration methods on the Internet, and have for the last 25 years. What is happening faster now is the concept of “3d printing” online services is extending to all semiconductors, materials, manufacturing, assembly. It is not being done in any coherent way, but things are improving.

A “best in world” “now” solution for an instrument or process or material, might well be sufficient. The collaborators for the open group can encourage particular solutions, but the results are tested and verified for all to see. And nearly real time.

Sorry. I am writing up my notes from the last 25 years and any time some important global issue (like getting high quality precise solutions reliably to all research groups and startup industries) is high on my list.

Most of the “commercialization” efforts fail because most of the ideas and methods are too small and odd shaped to fit more than the originators. But cooked in an online global collaborative worksite, with support networks tied to fabricators, crowdfunding, investors, funding agencies, training for new generations — those kinds of groups, especially AI-assisted, can work at scale and afford to do it right.
