Networks of atoms and particles and molecules. milli micro nano pico femto atto devices and processes

Zhigang Suo @zhigangsuo In Thursday morning, I ended my lecture with this slide.

Knits and weaves are yarns of dense entanglements. Knits are stretchable, but weaves are not.

Sitting beside me on the plane today is a lady knitting a sock.

She entangles a single yarn into a network.

A single yarn! https://pic.x.com/rgz6lullcz x.com/zhigangsuo/sta…

Pretty much everything you want to do with molecules, can be done with atoms and particles, but 1000 times higher energy density. The Internet is moving that way steadily, but it can go faster and more deliberately, and more efficient for global society – intentionally, rather than everyone reinventing “how to get humans to work together” at all scales. Chains and networks of atoms, rather than bulky molecules.
