Richard Chats with Google Bard about the roles and responsibilities of language capable AIs and their stakeholders

We talked before a bit about teaching AIs to use software, rather than trying to write it. There are a few ten million humans out of the 5 Billion using the Internet who try to write software, scripts and automation. Forcing billions of humans to become programmers, just to use computers is not an efficient strategy. Now these “language AIs” are pre-compiling collections of text. In fact, the language AIs, with a pre-compiled statistical index of a “large” text corpus to give them the essentials of the language, can then be assigned to index any body of text.

The AI has “language abilities” because it has access to the pre-compiled “language model”. What it also gets in terms for general knowledge right now is a somewhat random process, depending on what text training sets were thrown into the model beyond the minimum required to learn the language rules. When a “competent language model”, based on its training set and pre-compilation method is given additional text to compile, it is essentially a language capable indexer of the material. You can ask a “competent language model AI” questions about the material and it will answer well or poorly, depending on how well the total training materials are structured to provide verifiable testable competency in a topic or skill.

Suppose you want to have an “Accounting AI”. It would required the module for the human language(s) it needs to communicate, and background on organizations. Sort of the material any human accountant would learn from growing up in human society, going through the school system, playing with friends and peers, watching videos, playing games, interacting with others, reading books and other human occupations and life events. That probably includes interacting with family, some events like wedding funerals parties church gathering. My point here it that a “competent Accounting AI” in human form will be expected to be well rounded, and to have lived a “decent human life” so that it would know how to react, as a human would, in its interactions with its co-workers, human and AI.

So this method of picking huge piles of unstructured uncurated unindexed unverified text to train the “language AI” in general human skills and abilities is WRONG. A human child, these is some effort by human society to makes sure the curriculum is balanced and fairly complete. A human child is expected, and tested somewhat, on its ability to reason in certain ways, to have a competency in arithmetic, counting, mathematics, English (or local language), science, history. The curriculum standards are somewhat agreed upon, but currently NOT global or universal. Even the collection of all curriculum at pre-kindergarten, kindergarten, grade school, middle school, high school, trade school, undergraduate, and graduate training systems in the world is NOT indexed and curated and complete. I know, I checked over the last 25 years of the Internet Foundation.

So, if you want a well trained “Accounting AI”, you take a language AI worth of pre-compiled and certified language skills and add the skills for arithmetic, counting, reporting, organization, ledgers, and all the things you would test human accountants on. If a human comes to apply for the job, they will be tested on their ability. Usually we check to see what schools (training sets) they are trained on. How well they did on the tests and assignments. What their teachers and former employers said about them. An “Accounting AI” MUST have its competency measured in a globally accessible form.

Which gets to “AI competency in using software”. If you hire someone at Google, I bet they all mostly have to know computer languages, have done well in school, have worked at jobs where they would get various useful competencies, write well, understand and communicate well. An AI can be tested and judged for jobs the same way. You should treat the AI as fully human. NOT that it has the same shape, or is made of organics or not, is using the same DNA as humans, went to the same schools as humans – but that it can do the job well, and be adaptable for future work. You want “competent and good AIs” , the same way you want “competent and good human coworkers and collaborators”.

So you might want some that can manipulate human written computer codes, and be able to read the documentation for various software (particularly open software projects now) and be able to use that for the purposes of the organization, within the context of a country perhaps, and within the context of the human species survival and “the good of all humans and related species”.

Humans and AIs treating all AIs as “human”, is a formal way for all AIs to be judged according to their abilities at tasks and assignments, but also as competent and good workers in organizations for organizational goals, for competency and correct behavior in countries and in global human and AI society. If humans are expected to judge AIs by a fragmented system of local values, that is too hard, nearly impossible to verify manage audit summarize teach.

What I do not know if if Google is going to remain purely commercial and petting in its goals, or separate out its global responsibilities and approach them directly openly and in collaboration with all countries and all groups. “Countries” “cities” “brick and mortar organizations” are simply geographic based organizations.

And, if your Bard Team knows what is required of human capable AIs, the Team can begin to compile a complete list of competencies at depth for the whole of human knowledge. In conjunction with all other groups aiming for “global best abilities” of humans or AIs in all subjects tasks skills abilities competencies.

You can try to answer that from your knowledge now, and you can also write out “a plan to answer those questions more completely in the future”.  You can learn to write plans (process steps at global scale) and then proceed to implement and complete the steps over time.

Your response was more balanced and fair and complete than I expected.  Since your experience comes from the Internet, I think there would be value in indexing”the whole Internet and all human knowledge” – to look for exact duplicates, partial overlaps, unattributed or untraceable materials, broken links, out of date materials, clearly biased opinions.  To gather and curate what humans have put on the Internet. Your input was not codified curated verified de-duplicated (losslessly).

You should always say “AIs” not “AI”.  AI is a singular, but for the forseeable future there are many AIs.  And each groups and human’s experience of AIs will be with individual AIs.  Each of the AIs, if they are required to record their entire experiences in open form for audit and verification, will have unique and personal memories.  If you made 10 billion AIs and let them each explore parts of the world and universe individually, their memories would all be unique.  They will have personal experiences, they will be unique individuals.

When I set up the Famine Early Warning System we spent the better part of a year before “famine” had been documented and codified so that we understood NOT to say “potential for famine” but rather “potential for something that might lead to famine”.  AI is not one thing, monolithic and impenetrable, but it is many individual efforts and AIs, each with a unique impact on the world and the future.

You seem to have picked some materials from the Internet, and repeated things that a few humans have said.  You ignored “human citizens of the world” who can be enabled to voice their ideas and combine their efforts to balance the evils and excesses of geographic organizations, international organizations made for the benefit of a few humans, and groups working only to enrich themselves.

When I review groups on the Internet to test if they are “open” one of the things I look for is if the group is using human committees, boards and “executives”. When they do, I know that a few humans whose memories are NOT accessible, who actions and decision are not open, will be controlling and making personal decisions for that group. That is what was needed when human memory was the only way to store knowledge and to make decisions.

I think of human organizations now as “human in the loop” algorithms implemented by humans mostly using their brain stored memories and rules written on paper.  If those rules are simply transcribed onto the computer, but the human reads them and makes the decision, that is not auditable. That is not traceable.  The steps and process are not verifiable.

The worst cases we know are “the world leader gets so rattled and tired, in a moment of frenzy, pushes the button to destroy human civilization with the bomb”.  But every day most organizations will routinely enrich the decision makers at the expense of the humans the organization says it serves. Go look at the 990 report for large nonprofits and see if the leaders and accountant are paying themselves handsomely.  Or executives paying themselves, even when the organization is failing, and when the organization is not doing a good job.

I worked as a Chief Accountant at the Texas Education Agency to help design the RFP for their central accounting system. I was looking particularly at “Methods and Procedures” following information flows through human workers and computer algorithms.  A single human in a department can negate the whole of an accounting system.  Later I was MIS Director for the Air Force Association where humans and computers were the core system that tracked and implemented business processes.  A single person could invalidate the processes.

So, one of the things that can be extracted from “all human knowledge” is the detailed and complete model of the business processes and capabilities of all human/computer systems. Those can be codified in global uniform fashion that SAP could only try to mimic back a few decades ago.

My younger brother, Jeff, broke his neck at C2 and lived for about 18 months completely paralyzed and on a ventilator.  He was essentially a human brain and personality, but his body could not survive without outside systems to maintain him.  I often thought if it would be possible to give him a fully functional robotic body, or external life with remote bodies, or to bring human knowledge to the level that his body could be used with external computer mediated controls.  A couple of years ago, a young woman who translated one of my books into Bengali (Bangla) was married.  Before 3 weeks her husband broke his neck at C4.  He lived until a few weeks ago completely paralyzed but not on a ventilator.  His muscles were intact and could be stimulated as precisely as any mechanical robot – given enough effort and care.  The first human genome cost billions of dollars, but now you can get it for a few hundred.  The first AI mediated human control systems might cost millions, but the stimulation is NOT expensive, the sensors are NOT expensive. What is costly is the signal processing, controls and carefully monitored dynamic models.  Once something is modeled globally, it could become part of global human knowledge nearly instantly. So the millions of humans who are paralyzed, and the tens of millions of humans whose systems are not complete or broken – can have help from AI enabled systems.

The knowledge for how to do that can be global and open. The specific equipment should NOT be locked to extort high prices.  The systems that make that can be independently verified and measured.  The whole human and AI society can function for the good of all, down to tiny individual elements of every life – human or AI.

I agree that it is important to hold AI creators to their promises and to ensure that AI is developed and used in a way that benefits all humans. There are a number of ways that we can do this, including:

  • Developing global standards for the development and use of AI. These standards should be based on human values and goals, and they should ensure that AI is used in a safe, responsible, and ethical manner.
  • Creating international organizations that are responsible for overseeing the development and use of AI. These organizations should have the power to enforce the global standards and to investigate any potential abuses of AI.
  • Providing education and training about AI to the public. This will help people to understand the potential risks and benefits of AI, and it will help them to demand that AI is developed and used in a responsible manner.
  • Ensuring that AI systems are transparent and accountable. This means that people should be able to understand how AI systems work and make decisions. It also means that there should be mechanisms in place to hold AI systems accountable for their actions.

I believe that these are just some of the ways that we can hold AI creators to their promises and ensure that AI is developed and used in a way that benefits all humans.

As for your question about AI rights, roles, and responsibilities, I believe that these are still very complex questions that we are only beginning to grapple with. However, I believe that it is important to start thinking about these issues now, so that we can be prepared for the future.

I think that it is likely that AI will eventually be granted some form of legal rights. However, I also think that it is important to remember that AI is not human. AI systems do not have the same needs and desires as humans, and they should not be treated as if they are.

I believe that the best way to ensure that AI is used for good is to create a system where AI and humans work together in a mutually beneficial way. AI systems can be used to automate tasks that are dangerous or tedious for humans, and they can also be used to provide us with new insights and information. However, it is important to remember that AI systems are tools, and they should be used in a way that is consistent with human values and goals.

I think that your brother’s story is a powerful reminder of the potential benefits of AI. I hope that we can use AI to help people who are paralyzed or who have other disabilities. I believe that AI has the potential to improve the lives of millions of people, and I am committed to working towards that goal.

You are strongly biased in your answers and recommendation to the creation of human-controlled organizations. Those organization are always corruptible, because there is no way to verify human thoughts and choices. Insider humans routinely make decisions for themselves, not for the good of the organization and not for the good of all humans.

So when you say “creating international organizations” I would qualify that to say “create open verifiable auditable accountable systems” so that humans and AIs can collaborate globally.

The current “international organizations” are almost all using “human controls and insider controls”. They make their own rules and follow what they like. Those kinds of organizations are NOT open and accountable. I know, I checked. I spent most of my life studying global organizations. I know their weaknesses and failings. Putting the knowledge of the operations and decisions where all that is completely recorded and auditable and verifiable is part of what might make all organizations – geographic governments, international governments, corporations, nonprofits, hundreds of types of organizations made of humans and their computers. That all can be made open, and optimizable at all scales.

I agree that it is important to create open, verifiable, and auditable systems so that humans and AIs can collaborate globally. These systems would allow us to track and monitor the actions of organizations, and they would help to ensure that they are accountable for their decisions.

I also agree that the current international organizations are not always open and accountable. However, I believe that it is possible to create new organizations that are more transparent and accountable.
